If you’ve ever cancelled an appointment, felt your heart race in the parking lot, or avoided dentistry for years because of anxiety, we want you to hear this clearly: you’re not alone, and you’re not “difficult.” At Smart Dental in Richland, we offer Sedation Dentistry because comfort matters—and because a calmer experience helps patients finally get the care they need without fear.
This is a patient-focused guide to how sedation works in our office, who it helps most, and what to expect before, during, and after your visit.
Dental anxiety can come from many places: past experiences, sensitive teeth, a strong gag reflex, fear of needles, or simply feeling out of control in the chair. Sedation helps by lowering your body’s stress response so you can:
Most importantly, sedation helps people who have been avoiding care finally move forward—often with huge relief afterward.
We offer two primary comfort options, depending on your needs and the type of visit.
Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small mask. It works quickly and is easy to adjust throughout your appointment.
What it feels like: calm, floaty, and relaxed—while still awake and able to respond.
Why patients like it: it wears off fast, and many people feel ready to return to their day afterward (depending on the procedure).
Nitrous oxide is an excellent option for patients who want help relaxing but prefer minimal downtime.
Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication before your visit to create deeper relaxation.
What it feels like: drowsy, calm, and less aware of time passing. Some patients remember less of the appointment.
Important note: you’ll need a driver and should plan on taking it easy for the rest of the day.
Oral sedation is often helpful for patients with stronger anxiety or for longer, more involved visits.
Sedation isn’t about “knocking you out” in our office setting. You’re still breathing on your own and able to respond to us. Think of it as turning down the volume on stress so your body can relax while we do your treatment efficiently and gently.
Also, sedation is not a replacement for local anesthesia. We still numb the area so treatment is comfortable. Sedation simply helps you feel calm during the process.
Sedation dentistry is especially helpful if you:
Even if your treatment is “routine,” sedation can still be appropriate if your anxiety is high. Our job is to help you get care comfortably—without judgment.
Safety starts with planning. Before we recommend sedation, we review:
We tailor the approach to your needs, not a generic template. If we believe a different comfort strategy is safer for you, we’ll be honest and guide you accordingly.
We’ll give you clear instructions. Depending on which option you choose, that may include:
If you’re anxious, planning is powerful. Knowing what will happen reduces stress significantly.
Here’s what a typical sedation visit looks like:
Patients often say the appointment felt shorter than expected and far less stressful than they imagined.
We’ll send you home with clear post-care instructions so you’re never guessing what’s normal.
We regularly help patients who feel embarrassed about how long it’s been. Please know: we’re not here to lecture. We’re here to help you take the next step. Sedation often makes it possible to start with the most urgent needs and then build a realistic plan from there.
You deserve dental care that feels calm and manageable. If anxiety has been holding you back, sedation may be the bridge that helps you move forward.
